It all started in the summer of 2017, when Joel – after 20+ years of playing, working, and binge-watching tennis – had a lightbulb moment: “Why does tennis coverage always feel so serious? Where’s the pub chat?”

Fast-forward six months, and The Passing Shot was born on a bench in Melbourne Park at the Australian Open. Joel and Kim were on a mission to talk about the ATP & WTA Tours like two mates swapping hot takes over a pint – with a healthy dose of banter, questionable predictions, and the occasional “Did you see that shot?!” moment.

Things were rolling along nicely… until 2020, when the pandemic shut down tennis. No matches? No problem. Joel & Kim kept the rallies going and consolidated the podcast down into four series - Tour Catch-Ups, Slam Round-by-Rounds, Tennis Weekly Meets and The Book Club.

By 2022, they decided it was time for a fresh name: Tennis Weekly, produced by Passing Shot Productions. And just a year later, Chris joined the team – bringing extra energy, a sharp eye for stats, and an encyclopaedic knowledge of the game.

Today, we’re still doing what we’ve always done: three tennis fans talking tennis like you would with your mates – no overanalysis, no generic cliches, just pure love for the game spoken like down your local (and maybe a little gossip too!).

A brief history of the show…

  • Joel Girling

    Founder & Co-Host

From Henman Hill to Flushing Meadow, Joel has played, worked and watched tennis for the best part of three decades. A ‘career fan slammer’ and an Andy Murray maniac, his crowning achievement (apart from setting up the podcast!) was watching the Scot win his first slam live at the 2012 US Open against Novak Djokovic.

  • Kim Mackenzie

    Co-Host

Avidly following the tennis circuit since 2006 when a young Mallorcan made her realise tennis existed beyond Wimbledon, Kim has globe-trotted the world ever-after in the quest of watching Rafael Nadal. A self-proclaimed Wimbledon Queue expert – something to this day Joel still doesn’t completely get the appeal of!

  • Christopher Kneebone

    Co-Host

A serious Daniela Hantuchova fan since that R2 Wimbledon 2003 clash with Asagoe (if you know you know). A WTA enthusiast who knows his Jule Niemeiers from his Carol Zhaos. If there is a female player on court, Chris will have heard of them. His favourite slam is Roland Garros, just don’t tell Joel and Kim or the All England Lawn Tennis Club for that matter!
